Vocalist Julia Karosi creates some other exotic sounds that range from Old World to Other World on this collection of songs that feature guitarist Ben Monder in a wide kaleidoscope of colors and sounds with Aron Talas/p, Adam Bogothy/b and Bendeguz Varga/dr.
A few of the songs have lyrics, such as the liturgical “Sorrow” and edgy “Bluebeard’s Castle Prologue” with Monder’s guitar sounds creating atmospheres akin to the Hound of the Baskervilles. Most of the time Karosi uses her voice as a creator of environments, scatting on the post bop “Rebirth”, haunting on the dark “Romanian Folk Dances No. 3” and brooding with Bogothy on “Mikrokosmos IV, No. 113” as part of her “Hommage a Bela Bartok”. The team forms a festive folk circle to the piece “Outro For Romanian Folk Dances” and Karosi gets operatic o Mikrokosmos Iv, No. 115”. The mix of Eastern Europe harmonies from parts of plazas and churches make for echoes and dreams that are both serene and agonizing. Worth a tour!
