At this stage in his life and career, octogenarian and maestro Ron Carter is putting out some his most creative material, with this duet album with guitarist Yotam Silberstein a duo delight. Both know their way around a melody, and the two know communications skills like translators at the UN, with deft dancing on “Love Letters”, a romantic “Nova Ilusao” and a tender but upbeat take of “The Lamp Is Low”. Silberstein’s touch is folksy on “What Is There To Say” and the tribute “Blues For Brother Malone”, dedicated to Carter’s longtime band mate. Carter himself is marvelous, stretching out a bit for “What is There to Say” and bopping with a youthful bounce on “Mil Dew”. I could listen to things like this all day, which is why I still never miss Carter’s annual visits to LA.
