Some music has to be seen to be heard.

The classic TV show Star Trek has the background music for , it’s two first “pilot” shows, “The Cage” and “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, composed and conducted by Alexander Courage. Besides the iconic theme and closing credits, you get the themes from the opening star date, titles and vignettes like “Vena’s Dance” and “Silvery Orbs”. A must for Trekkies!

Is there a better known theme than the sizzling “Mission: Impossible” sequence. Composed by Lalo Schifrin and John E. Davis, the music covers seasons both old and new. Along with an interview with Peter Graves, you get suites from “The Contender”, “The Bayou” and “The Killer” among others. What? No Masks?

Best known for his work for his Alfred Hitchcock films, Bernard Herrman made the soundtracks for scores of wonderful films, always creating just the right mood. This disc features his haunting sounds from 1941’s “The Devil and Daniel Webster”, 1976  “Obsession” and a portrait of Orson Welles in “Welles Raises Kane”. The haunting toccata and lovely “Ballad of Springfield Mountain” from “Devil” is still thrilling, while Hermann’s last work for the DePalma film includes the cathedral organ from London’s St. Giles. The tribute to Welles includes ideas from “Citizen Kane” and “The Magnificent Ambersons”, guaranteed to put a chill up  your spine. Bring the popcorn!
