“One day of praying and six nights of fun
The odds ‘gainst going to heaven are six to one”
So were the lyrics of “Walk On the Wild Side”
No, not THAT version!
This fourth volume of One Day…juxtaposes the groove of R&B and black gospel from the 40s and 50s, with the music the same, but the messages literally worlds apart. For the Saturday night crowd, Lightnin’ Slim gelts out “Too Close Blues” and Big Bill Broonzy picks and grins through “Five Feet Seven” . For the Sunday service, the Fairfield Four gloriously harmonize the reverent “Let Your Will be Done, and The Pilgrim Travelers preach it on “Good News”. Best of all is the mix of both worlds, with Jalacy Hawkins straddling both worlds on “Baptize Me In Wine”.
The spirits may be different, but the delivery is the same; drunk on wine or the Holy Spirit? Can you do both?
