Cold Specks: Neuroplasty

Every now and then I try to check out the local  pop/rock scene, so I came across this band that features vocalist Al SFX, drummer Loel Campbell, bass and synthesizer player Jim Anderson, various guitarists and keyboardists, and even jazzer Ambrose Akinmusire on trumpet. What you end up with is a collection of tunes that sound film nourish in mood and late 70s New Wave in attitude and delivery. Dark moods roll in on the synthy “Let Loose the Dogs” and the dirge like “A Formal Invitation.” Eerie moods prevail, with “Absisto” being the gloomiest but the moody guitar on “Exit Plan” deserves special notice. If you’re looking for music to get you out of your bad mood, this is not the best place to start unless your only other choice is a Janice Ian anthology.
