Diane Monroe & Tony Miceli: Alone Together

Violin and Vibes?!?!? On paper, this looks like a major loser-trust me,you’re going to LOVE IT! What Diane Monroe/violin and Tony Miceli/vibes  do is take turns in doing the underlying rhthym with the other does some nice little dance on the melody of pieces ranging to Ralph Towner’s lovely and glowing “Icarus” to a back porch folksly “East of the Sun.” The passionately bouncing vibes on Chick Corea’s “Spain” make you feel like you’re watching a table dance while Monroe builds up the sweaty nightclub atmosphere. Each take a turn on a solo venture, with Monroe gets churchified on “Wade in the Water” and Miceli goes Cumberland Gap on “Tennessee Waltz,” and they do WONDERS with a pair of Monk tunes that are joyfully idiosyncratic, see sawing on “Misterioso” and bopping on  “Eronel.” They close the album by taking you where no man has gone before, making spacey sounds with a version of “Theme From Star Trek” that will make you want to beam aboard. WOW!
