THE NEW GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK? Just Passing Through: The Breithaupt Brothers Songbook Vol II

Are there any composers out there to challenge the Porters, Gershwins and Berlins of yesteryear? Brothers Jeff and Don Breithaupt have built up an impressive catalogue over the years, and this second volume gives a good case for giving them a second or third look. A rotating team of rhythm and horns supports a Shakespearian collection of vocal cameos that include Sophie Milman, Ian Thomas, Marc Jordan and Ron Sexsmith.

You get sensuous sambas with Laila Biali on “Wonder Boy” as well as some B3 bluesy moods on “Bad Influence” with Paul Shaffer. Lots of earnest pop is in the mix, with “Where Are They Now?” with Kellylee Evans” and “The Angels’ Share” done by Marc Jordan. Adult pop with “Where’s Mantis Evar” and Sophie Milman carries a torch on “Ghost Writer.”  Will this era be looked back on as a Golden Age a half century from now?
