Monty Alexander: Harlem-Kingston Express Vol. 2

Pianist Monty Alexander leans to what he does best in melding mainstream jazz with the lilt of reggae on this infectious collection if party music. Irresistible grooves permeate standards like the cheerful “People Make the World Go Round” and the Iberian “Concierto De Aranjuez” and a bit of bop is injected into the Jamaican anthem “The Hardy They Come.” Some  modern R&B is provided when Caterina Zapponi brings in the ballad “The River Rolls On” and a bit of Detroit comes in with a take of “What’s Going On.” George Benson, Ramsey Lewis and Joe Sample make cameos on the lighthearted “Love Notes”  and a handful of concert tracks will make you feel you’re in a sweaty club downtown. Party is hearty here.
