The Bad Plus: Inevitable Western

You’ve gotta give them credit-the trio of Reid Anderson/b, Ethan Iverson/dr and David King/dr have created their own unique and identifiable sound, which is the ultimate goal of every artist. They puree’d Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring on their last release, and this time they create moods akin to a John Ford flick with a collection of signature originals.

Their signature focus is to take a single idea and milk it, stretch it and explore it for all it’s worth for the duration of the tune. The can get quite incessant as on the repetitive drive on “Gold Prisms Incorporated” which keeps going like the stampede scene from Red River. Other times, they drift off into the prairie as on “I Hear You”  and King holds the reins tight as the wagons go drivng along on “Adopted Highway.” Anderson has his spurs jingle jangle jingle on ”Do It Again”  and their signature quirkiness is as sharp as a sheriff’s badge on “You Will Lose All Fear.” They’re touring around with Josh Redman, which should be a treat for all involved.
