When you go to a jazz club, or hear an album, if you’re like I am, you’ve probably thought, “I wonder how this artists gets the ideas for his music.” This book by musician Scott Shachter tries to get into the jazz mind and share it with us in this story about a sax player named Shawn who tries to balance his special gift for music with the realities of neighbors, mob bosses and significant others who vie for his attention and flesh. Anyone who’s had to choose between the calling of vocation and realities of life will have a fun time identifying at moments with this guy trying to shake off his personal demons. A good summer read!
