Al Jarreau: My Old Friend

Subtitled “Celebrating George Duke”, this latest release by vocal hero Al Jarreau is a moving tribute not only to the famed keyboardist/producer, but also to the style of sleek and soulful R&B styled jazz that both stars pioneered.

Jarreau’s voice is in great form, and still flexible as he delivers wonderful vocal percussion to the intro on the Earth, Wind and Fire-y “My Old Fried.” All stars galore show up on each song, with Dianne Reeves teaming up with Marcus Miller on the easy backbeating of “Someday” and Lalah Hathaway” joining in for some upbeat soul on “Sweet Baby.” Miller shows up again with trumpeter Mike Cottone for a Miles Davis-inspired “Churchyheart” while a cruising avalanche of percussion joins in with Stanley Clarke’s bass for a joyfully upbeat medley with Reeves. Some greasy funk is supplied by Drl John on “You Touch My Brain” and the devotee was still around to contribute some keyboards on “Bring Me Joy.” Jarreau himself reaches back for some heat on the heartfelt “No Rhyme, No Reason. “ He’s been on a roll lately; this being his 4th excellent album in a row. Good show!
