Downing/Lewis/Occhipinti: Bristles

Here’s a jazz trio that you don’t hear every day.  You’ve got guitarist David Occhipinti, bassist Andrew Downing and trumpeter Jim Lewis caught in a 2013 gig in Ontario, Canada and in the studio where they mix and match standards and concise improvisations. The music leans towards impressionistic pastiches, where Occhipinti’s guitar creates moods and soundtracks as on Miles Davis’ “Solar” or Jobim’s “Once I Loved”, while Lewis’ crisp and clear horn keeps everything cogent. The under two minute collection of improvs such as “Paul Klee,” “Cy Twombly” and “Jean Dubuffet” are, as you can tell by the titles, aural paintings that veer towards free form. Here, they serve as links to the concert pieces and for that they serve the total concept well. Clever and original.
