Over a year ago, Rat Pack vocalist Jason Paul Curtis put out an impressive Christmas album. This time out, the singer/trumpeter shows he can also compose as he puts together of his own tunes (and a couple covers) with a bohemian-sounding band of Ray Mabalot/p, Ephriam Wolfolk Jr/b, Woody Hume/dr, Dave Schiff/woodwinds and John Albertson/g. Curtis has a hip delivery, and with his 21st Century concepts delivered in Rogers and Hart moods, he makes tunes like “Phone” and “Brooklyn” sound both nostalgic and contemporary. Albertson plays a major role on this session as he provides Hot Club of France-type chords on “American Gypsy” and “Pane E Vino.” A fresh take of The Godfather theme on “Speak Softly, Love” is a treat, as is the closing “One More Kiss, Dear” with its Bladerunner soundtrack taking you both forward and back in time. A real pleasant surprise!
