Every now and then, I veer into my guilty pleasure of country singers that walk with a limp, and this time around I came across David Olney. He looks like he was on a wagon train with Walter Brennan, and tells stories like he hitched along Highway 10. The music ranges from juke joint blues to KC swagger, and his stories can go from the oldest story in the Bible (“Servant, Job”) to forgotten American heroes (“Soldier of Misfortune”). Fun stories like “Mister Stay at Home” mix with tender mercies as on “Little Bird” with the obligatory lonely man blues on “Sad Saturday Night.” If ya wanna hear a good yarn, buy this guy a beer and let him bend your ear for awhile.
