Uri Caine: Szpilman

Bet you never heard of the Wladyslaw Szpilman Songbook before!!! Well, pianist Uri Caine explores compositions by him along with Ksawery Wojcinski/b and Robert Rasz/dr and the results are a refreshing mix of modern post bop jazz.

Beautiful melodic pieces such as the waltz-like “Nie Wierze Piosence” and Eastern European “Zakochani” display a wonderful Old World feel, the latter boasting of some wondrous  bass work intertwining between piano and drums. Some fun stride work is exhibited on the vaudevillian “sto Lat” and the striding “Do Widzenia Teddy” which both feature Caine’s mastery of the entire 88 keys. Dramatic interplay is felt on “W Malym Kinie” and the cumbustable “Szilman Fantasy” while a dainty and childlike innocence is displayed on the lovely “Deszcz.” This trio is a real treat!
