A couple years ago, trumpeter/vocalist Bria Skonberg put out an impressive and fresh debut, and this one continues the upward ascent. Mixing the jazz tradition in both instrument and voice, yet sounding like modern times, Skonberg has hit on the right pulse for the present music scene. She displays her bona fides on the horn, as well as her link to the past and present, with material like “Three Little Words/Sir Duke” that mixes Depression Era swing with 70s soul. She has a nice gospel feel on “Go Tell It” and makes you feel like you’re walking down Burgundy Street on “Six More Weeks” and “ Winin’ Boy Blues” as she plays and sings with a raucous beat and fuzzy guitar wailing in the back and foreground. Her clear and rhythmic voice shines like chrome on the folksy “Come Into Your Own” and the latin cutie “Share the Wealth” while she shows great depth of field on “Break My Fall.” This gal’s a triple threat!
