Singing, playing guitar and piano, Lucky Peterson gives tribute to his own blues playing father on this bona fide smoker of a session.
His voice has a snarl and growl to it that tells you he’s been around the block a few times, as he roars through the B3 and guitar on the wailing “Blues in my Blood” and the funky reading of Wilson Pickett’s “Funky Broadway.” He knows sin and salvation as well, delivering a gospel rollicking “I Pity The Fool” and testifying before the congregation during one version of “I’m Still Here.” He can boogie with the best on the “You Lucky Dog” and takes you to the front porch on “Joy” with some cozy acoustic picking. Even the reggae hit “I Can See Clearly Now” gets dirt under its nails in a cheerful take. You’re gonna like this guy-he sings like he’s lived it and walks with a limp to prove it.
