****RINGER OF THE WEEK****Richie Kaye’s Music and Mirth: The Last Whoop De Doo!

The notes accompanying this disc read “File Under Classic American Jazz.” What more can be said about a collection of (mostly) duets between guitarist/vocalist Richie Kaye and reedmeister Tony Lavorgna. Yes, pianist Sam Kuslan rolls up his piano on the street corner for takes of “Green Dolphin Street” and “Honeysuckle Rose,” but for the most part, you’ve got shucking and jiving rhythms on pieces such as “Put On A Happy Face” and “The Days of Wine and Roses” with Kaye going bel canto on ”Over the Rainbow.” Wordless jive vocals are a hoot on a take of “My Blue Heaven” that includes Lavorgna’s fervent licorice stick, while “Black Orpheus” has the ebony glowing in the dark. A fun filled “Lady Be Good” sets the stage for a sweet “Harlem Nocturne,” but nothing prepares you for the finale, a rousing version of “I Love Lucy” that sounds like it was recorded at the Club Babalu. This disc will renew your vows to jazz, believe you me!
