Electric guitarist Gary Schwartz gives an exciting tribute to the sounds and attitude of free jazz icon Ornette Coleman on this album of concert music from Montral Quebec in 2011. The twelve piece band features a four piece horn section, violin, two keyboards, bass and a pair of drummers to capture the textures of Coleman’s music. Brooding horns create intriguing atmospheres on pieces such as “Broken Shadows” and “Lonely Woman,” the latter featuring Schwartz’s pensive guitar in the languishing intro. Frank Lozano’s bass clarinet veers in and out of the exciting pulse on ”Law Years” and the rhythm team drives forward on “School Work.” Schwartz’s own pieces “Whatd’yasay” and “Between the Lines” feature some chaotic and frenetic moments, while the mixture of horns as framework and launching pads for solos serves the sounds and visions of Coleman well.
