I think saxist Mindi Abair has been doing some working out at the gym, as she shows a tone of muscle on the rocking and rollicking session that includes Memphis horn sounding sections and 50s-60s rhythms. Guests on this hot and heavy album include Greg Allman, Joe Perry, Booker T. Jones, Keb Mo’, Trombone Shorty, and WHERE DID THEY FIND WADDY WACHTEL? That guy was on EVERY great session in the 70s! Welcome back!
Fuzz toned guitars and sassy vocals are on tunes like “I Can’t Lose,” while some olds school bluesy rock is spotlighted on ”Movin’ On.” Soulful sounds akin to classic Delaney and Bonnie are on the rock steady “I’ll Be Your Home” and the B3 smokes like a Romeo et Juliet on “Addicted to You.” Even some 80s punk a la Blondie gets a head shake on “Train.” All through, Abair’s sax growls, grunts and grinds like it’s a smoky joint in Lafayette, Louisiana, with more gristle than a T-Bone steak at The Pantry. This ain’t smooth jazz, baby!
