Douglas Detrick’s Anywhen Ensemble: The Bright And Rushing World

Trumpeter Douglas Detrick takes a step forward in the tricky genre of chamber jazz. He assembles Hashem Assadullahi/as-ss, Shirley Hunt/cello, Steve Vacchi/bassoon and Ryan Giesack/dr together for a collection of originals that mix thick and rich ensemble passages with some free and frisky improve. The inclusion of the bassoon makes for some rich textures and moods, as on the gently flowing “The Door Is Opening” and “A Seeker, Submissive.” Hunt takes the cello and can bow it as on “And You Watch As He Goes Out” or does some pizzicato work as on the skipping “Who Over Years…” and eveyrone gets a get feisty on the chirping title track and “A Question So Weightless it Floats Away.” Themes and melodies are akin to how Vaughan Williams might sound if he joined a jazz ensemble. Impressive!
