Elton John: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition)

It’s been two score years since Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road put him over the top to make him a household name. This 4 cd/1 dvd boxed set has just about everything you’ll ever need, even including the actual music from the original 2 lp set. Almost every song here has become a pop standard in one form or another, with “Candle in the Wind” being the song everyone knows, but “Harmony” and “I’ve Seen That Movie Too” being better deserved to last longer. Elton John was at his composing apotheosis, and even “Saturday’s All Right For Fighting” should be redone by some blues shouter. The other cds include versions of these tunes done by the likes of The Band Perry and Imelda May. Some acoustic demos of tunes such as “Grey Seal” and pop tunes such as “Philadelphia Freedom” are worth a listen, while a concert at Hammersmith shows how the piano man can work a crowd like few others. A true time capsule of an era long gone
