Pianist Danny Fox fronts a trio along with Chris Van Voorst Van Beest/b (how do you put THAT name on the back of a basketball jersey?) and Max Goldman/dr through a collection of original compositions. What ‘s striking about Fox is that he has an impressively strong left hand, and uses it to its fullest in that on songs such as “All Tolled,” Bonkers” and “Sterling” it sounds like two distinct melodies playing alongside each other instead of the usual comping for a melody. Your ears go in two directions on “Funhouse Memory” and “Confederates” as Fox can swing from the left or right side of the plate. It’s not delivered as gimmickry, just part of the theme, and it works charmingly. Nice outing all around.
