International Voices…Jaclyn Guillou: The Lover’s Walk, Susan Clynes: Life Is…

Here are a couple of vocalists that are working on creating new sounds

Canadian vocalist Jaclyn Guillou delivers a seven song mini-lp which melds modern indie folk with bohemian jazz. The trio of Bram Weijters/p, Piet Verbist/b and Toon Van Dionant/dr is delicate, deft and sensitively swinging and play as part of a team for Guillou’s quirky yet comfy delivery and timing. “Burning Question” and “Sometimes” come across as intimate and vulnerable conversations, while “The Lover’s Walk” and “The Road” display space as well as sound as a mood maker. Late night hip.

Belgian singer and  pianist Suan Clynes has a Broadway Musical style of voice and delivery, and it works well on her compositions with an eclectic small band that was caught live over a few gigs in her native country. At times, Clynes is all by her lonesome, just accompanying herself on piano on the cabaret-ish title track and piano bar cocktails “Tuesday rain” and “Le Voyage.” Other times, with Simon Lenski/cello, she takes you on long sonic journeys and dramatic stories on a BillyJoel-inspired “Childhood Dreams” and fascinating “Les Larmes” while you feel you’re  taking in a theatrical show on “When You’re Dead.” Pierre Mottet/b and Nico Chkifi/dr add a bit of rock and rhythm on “A Good Man” and “Ileana’s Song,” while all throughout her voice plays the role of a storyteller actress, bringing you along in each chapter.
