Mili Bermejo: Love Songs Of The Americas

I’ve never heard anything by vocalislt/compser Mili Bermejo before, but this is her 12th recording, so she’s no fly by nighter. She’s got a rich, warm and earthy voice, and on this release she surrounds herself with a very tasty and romantic chamber-like team of Eugene Friesen/cello, Tim Ray/p and Dan Greenspan/b through a collection of various songs from North, Central and South America. The material ranges from intimate serenades like “Pasarero” with sublime strings and piano, to “Te Amare’” and “La Luz…” which include extra embellishments from a full string orchestra. Her English vocabulary on “To Say Goodbye” and “I’ve Never Been In Love Before,” while warm, pales in comparison to her vulnerable work with Greenspan’s bass on “Te Abrace’ en la Noche.” Thoughtful, and lovingly agonizing material.
