German-born guitarist Nils Weinhold democratically leads a quintet with Adam Larson/sax, Fabian Almazan/key, Luques Curtis/b and Bastian Weinhold/dr through a collection of material dominated by the titular head. The material fluctuates around the mood post bop modernism, with intricate melody lines and edgy solos. Songs like “A Horse Is Still A Horse” or “The Almost Too Loud One” start off with sophisticated themes, but without having anything memorable to hold on to, before Larson takes away on an elliptical solo. A more tranquil piece like “Ballad For Anne” gives the instruments a chance to breath a bit, and they all seem a bit happier for the break. Crafted together a bit too much like a school project.
