Here’s a 21st century pianist with a lot of ideas bouncing around. Romain Collin leads a trio with Luques Curtis/b and Kendrick Scott/dr for some wide ranging and far reaching material that keeps its hold onto the heart of jazz but looks out into the future as well. Fiery and kinetic material such as “Storm” shows how assertive he and his band can be, while “Stop This Train” has an ebullient romantic mood. His take of Horace Silver’s “Nicas Dream” includes some sophisticated harmonies, as the addition of John Shannon’s guitar and Adrian’s daurov’s cello on “Greyshot” and “Burn Down” add some extra fascinating textures. Closing with a solo piece, ”One Last Try,” Collins displays a searching touch, as is the sounds on this impressive release.
