Here’s a sublime guitarist from the LA area that I think you’re going to like. Dan Sistos takes an acoustic guitar and puts it in a variety of settings that allow his Spanish touch on the strings to sing, sigh and sway to some lovely latin melodies. The supporting team varies from cozy and intimate ensembles with bass and percussion (by Juan Carlos Portill and Pete Korpela, respectively) to larger ensembles that include horns and orchestra. None of it is overpowering; even the strings and horns serve more as spotlights and satin draperies. Material like “El Viajero” and “Cumbia Para Me Gente” are originals that mix sensuous melodies with deft guitar dexterity. His playing is so gentle and subtle that it can be easy to gloss over how impressively sophisticated these tunes are; take time to take it in.
