Once in awhile, I see what’s out there in the pop/rock field, and came across this little band. Consisting of Jacob Loden/voc-g, Mike Reynolds/g-banj-voc, Tim Mathew/b, Kelsey Mathew/dr, this quartet puts together an album of what is called either “indie rock” or “alternative rock,” depending on which 20 something you’re talking to. The songs mix acoustic and electric guitars with standard vocals that lean towards groans as on “Natives” while getting a bit more 70s rockish on “Preservation.” The introspective “January Forever” includes a tip of the hat to the classic hymn “Come Thou Fount,” and a bit of banjo pops in on “Ashes, Ashes” along with some static guitar musings on “——.” Original title, to say the least!
