Back in 1969, there was a movie that was a spoof on European tours that visited 2-3 countries a day on a jam packed two week excursion, entitled If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium. Pink Martini albums are reminiscent of those kind of events, as each song seemingly takes you to a different local, and if you look real quickly, you can see the Fountain of Trevi!
This time, we’ve got longtime vocalist China Forbes with a teammate in Storme Large. China Forbes’ golden and flexible voice can work on the cabaret styled “Ich Dich Liebe” and goes into the Roaring 20s with “I’m Waiting For You to Come Back.” Even the Adriatic Sea gets visited with some Greek sounds with guest vocalist Meow Meow on “Omnide Zendagani” while she goes strictly Broadway show-tune on a wondrous intro and delivery on “What’ll I Do?”. Some wonderful melding of strings and samba coalesce on “Uskudar ” while “Get Happy/Happy Days” is a wondrous mixture. The voice of the late Phyllis Diller closes the album with a heartfelt “Smile,” closing this trip that will have multiple sonic stickers on your suitcase.
