The band Sketches is a quintet collective consisting of Matt Holman/tp, Jeremy Udden/as, Jarrett Cherner/p, Martin Nevin/b and Ziv Ravitz/dr, all of whom contribute compositions to this release. The tunes themselves are impressive post bop material, with rich and intelligent arrangements and a clever mix of melody and improvisation. Udden’s warm alto is a plus here, as shown on the gently driving “Trust” and the grooving “Cornerstone,” whle he melds well with Holman on “Shadow Search “ and “Dusk on the Porch.” The lonely horns are glorious on “Knew” while the rhythm team is both cohesive and flexible on “Running With The Princess” and “Dark.” You’ll like these guys!
