OH YEAH!!! Hugh Laurie: Live on the Queen Mary

I have to confess, I’ve never even HEARD of this UK guy Hugh Laurie. After watching this dvd of him in concert at the Queen Mary, I want to find EVERYTHING he’s ever done. His accent goes away and evolves into a wonderful and gritty moan as he sits behind the piano and along with the team of Herman Matthews/dr, David Piltch/b, Kevin Breit/g, Patrick Warren/key, he lays down riffs from the Crescent City and Kansas City that will get you heading for the Mississippi River. The horn section of Vincent and Elizabeth Lea along with the backing vocals by Jean McClain and Baby Moreno get the mood hot and sweaty, while Laurie takes you down town with rolling and tumbling takes of “Evenin’” and “Stagger Lee.” Real blues from the red clay are brought up for air on “Careless Love,” and even the roots of the roots is spotlighted on the churchified “Didn’t It Rain.” If you aren’t on your feet by the closing “Tipitina” and “Go To The Mardi Gras”, there just might not be any hope for you. This guy has got it down. And I mean DOWN!!!
