Tenor saxist Walt Weiskopf briought a top notch team to the University of South Carolina for an impressive gig back on April 8, 2008. The rhythm team of Renee Rosnes/p, Paul Gill/b and Tony Reedus/dr is flexible and veers towards modal jazz in a Coltrane-lite mold. Weiskopf’s tone is also in the Trane-Impulse influence, but without the agonizing search. His edginess is featured on tunes like the post-modern “Many Of Many Colors” as well as the slightly angular take of “Love For Sale.” Rosnes is quite cozy on the ”Little Minor Love Song” as well as the gliding “Scottish Folk Song.” The music here is exciting and yearning, with lots of flowing ideas, but never wandering too far off the path. Fans of pre-Love Supreme will have a field day here.
