Paquito D’Rivera and Trio Corrente: Song For Maura

This might be the Paquito D’Rivera you’ve been waiting and hoping for. He spends most of the time on his gloriously woody clarinet, and frames himself with the gentle team of Fabio Torres/p, Paulo Paulelli/b and Edu Ribeiro/dr for some wondrous latin folk/jazz. Material such as “Chorinho Pra Voce” and “Di Menor” meld D’Rivera’s serenading stick with some intricately romantic percussion, while a festive samba will get you to grab your partner on “1 X O.” On alto, he drives like a protobopper on “Cu E Mar” and the aggressively percussive “Recife Blues” and gets a bit edgy on the snappy “Ceboa No Frevo.” Marvelous piano work is displayed on “saidera’ while passion is the name of the game on the gentle “Song For Maura.” Perfect music for a moonlit night in the cabana.
