Jeff Hamilton Trio: Red Sparkle

Ah…this is why you live in the City of the Angels! Jeff Hamilton, who co-leads the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra, shows his other side on trio sessions such as this one with Christoph Luty/b and Tamir Hendleman/p. He put out a trio disc with the same guys a ways back, Symbiosis, that was excellent, and this one is just as tasty. Clever ideas, such as taking Monk’s “Bye-Ya” and giving it a Caribbean tilt, as well as turning the 70s pop tune “On and On” into a gentle Jamal groove. Hendleman’s piano touch is one that deserves a star on Hollywood Blvd, as does Hamilton’s brushes, as he coaxes delicate sparks out of a stunning “Laura” while driving the band with his sticks on a joyful “Ain’t That A Peach.” A workshop for drummers and arrangers in just around an hour. Hard to beat!
