Hammond B3 hummer Brian Charette tips the cap to the soul jazz hero and Brother Jack McDuff. As with all things B3, the tenor sax and guitar are sine qua non, and Cory Weeds with Dave Sikula bring out the best in the hip sound along with the deep grooves of John Lee’s drums. The McDuff pieces range from a sexy samba’d “6:30 In The Morning” as well as a shuffling bopper “The Jolly Black Giant” with Weeds blowing smoke rings and Sikula drawing with a #2 pencil. Charette does some clever chord work on his own “Microcosmic Orbit”, and boogaloos over the funky feel of “Whyd’ You Have To Go and Lie To Me Boy” while he paints the blues with a 4’ brush on the strutting “I like A Big Schnazolle”. Comfort food chords that sit right in the belly.
