Dennis Mitcheltree & Johannes Wallmann:  Holding Space

I’m a sucker for jazz duos, and this one with tenor saxist Dennis Mitcheltree and piano man Johannes Wallmann is a delight. Ok, so there are also a handful of tunes with Russ Johnson throwing in his horn, as on the bluesy “Via Valse”, graceful “Trio Adagio” and strutting “Digging A Shallow Grave For My Enemy”. After that, the sonatas glow, with Mitcheltree’s fluffy tenor in glorious tone for the patient “Annus Mirabilis” and the Tin Pan Alley-ish “Later That Year”. Wallmann strides right on “Blues For Mark” swings with relaxation on “Liberty Hop” and dances like a Klezmerian on “Sephardic Blues”. Classy conversations.
