Jacob Teichroew Quintet: Tableaux

Not only does Fresh Sound Records reissues some of jazz’s most important historical sessions, but the Spanish label also scouts out for exciting new talents. Here’s one you’re going to like.

Saxist Jacob Teichroew leads a team of Syberen Van Munster/g, Jarrett Cherner/key, Petros Klampanis/b and Ronen Itzik/dr through a collection of well constructed originals. He’s got a warm mellifluous sound on the tenor, and with some creative cymbal work by Itzik, makes for a flowing “Pastorale.” Cherner uses his piano keys like a salt shaker as he sprinkles notes on the brooding “Icicle” and the rhythm section ricochets on “Why Not?” while Van Munster gets a chance to let out some linear guitar work. As with all things tenor, ballads are a high point, with “Vocalise” spotlighting Reichroew’s tone. A closing “Tenet” includes some impressionistic keyboard colorings and Christina Teichroew’s alluring voice, pointing to a creative direction in the future. Well done!
