The stringed team f Alonso Arreola/eb-eb, Trey Gunn/baruk-warg, Michael Manring/b and Emmanuel Pina/oud are captured in thrilling fashion at Palacio del La Musica de Merica, Mexico for a 2023 concert. The mix of Latin, African and Middle Eastern melodies and improvisations is thrilling, with nary an overindulgence and much conversant interplay. Some intricate fusion takes place on “Relampaia” with mystical Crescent forms from Pina on “Versos”. Arreola works overtime on the dark “Big Fungus” with some mystical ambient effects created on “Forest Floor”. Gold coast blues sway on “Monkey Buisnessman” and the strings snap on the percussive “Mamadou’s Mercedes”. It’s hard to tell which instrument is which, with the tones and dynamics swirling by like pedestrian traffic in Time Square. A thrill of strings.
