Paul Dietrich’s Elemental Quartet: A Small Patch of Earth

Warm and mostly peacefully panoramic movements are created by trumpet player and composer Paul Dietrich with his Elemental Quartet being completed by Matt Gold/g, Brian Courage/b and Devin Drobka/dr. Dietrich has a luminous tone, and it always sounds unrushed, creating moods akin to a soundtrack to a John Ford western, open and majestic. He’s lyrical over Drobka’s brushes on the soft “Dust” and reflective around Gold’s guitar for “Confluence”. There’s a folksy feel of Americana with Dietrich and Gold forming tones of Monument Valley on “With A Chance of Rain” and “Confluence” has Courage and Gold reflecting like the sun off a lake. The most assertive moment is the muscular “Dry County”  with Drobka digging in deep, while the closing “Galaxies” is a fitting late sunset along the 45th parallel. Indian summer sounds.
