The latest vinyl cache from Craft Recordings include a classic from the 1950s and a mix of 70s sound.
Max Roach’s 1958 Deeds, Not Words is a collection of advanced hard bop with unique instrumentation. It features a young Brooker Little on trumpet, who is in excellent form throughout, as on “You Stepped Out of A Dream”, teaming with tenor saxist George Coleman and a ringer in tuba player Ray Draper for melodic purposes. Rounding out with bassist Art Davis, Roach does an inspiring solo piece “Conversation” and the band soars on “It’s You Or No One” and “ Filide”. Flying sparks
A collection of jazz sounds from the 1970s,sometimes a forgotten era for acoustic jazz, includes Sonny Rollins with George Duke on “Newkleus”, a hip and relaxed Hampton Hawes during “Web”, a searing Nat Adderley bopping on “Fortune’s Child” and tenor titan Gene Ammons backed by a funk fested 12 pieces band on a b luesy “Cantaro”. Vince Guaraldi goes Peanuts on “Little Birdie” and Chico Hamilton cools it with the rock band Little Feat on “Gengis”. Funky and fusion along with mainstreamers holding on for dear life.
