Wayne Alpern: Gotham

If you think you know your standards, take some time to check out this album of them arranged by Wayne Alpern, as he’s got some fresh wine for the old wineskins. It’s hard to beat the team involved, as John Patitucci/b, Clint De Ganon/dr, Andrew Ezrin/key and Kevin Ramessar/g supply the rhythm for a five piece horn section, violinist Antoine Silverman and a mix of vocalists. How does it work? Well, you’ve got sublime trumpets by Tatum Greenblatt and Trevor Neumann on a tender take of Motown’s “I’ll Be There”, while the brass gets fragrant on The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood”. And while we’re on The Fab Four, “Lady Madonna” is an absolute hoot, and “When I’m Sixty-Four” features tasty and nostalgic violin and strings. But it’s not all Boomer material, as “Blue Room” has a nifty high hat humming and “Desafinado” breezes with David Mann’s flute. And besides, how can you go wrong with an album that opens with the “Batman” theme! Stay tuned!
