WOMEN AT THE MIC… Sarah Tolar: Something Sarah, DeeAnn: It’s My Time

Subtle swingers…

Sarah Tolar is backed by a core of Angelo Versace/p, Thogar Tetens Lund/b , Bill Campbell/ddr and a mix and match of guests on this collection of originals and covers. She’s soft and icy on “Something Cool” and gets into a gospel spirit for “Be Good To Me”. A dash of Nashville is felt on the folksy “River” and a rich read of Randy Newman’s “Louisiana 1917”. Gentle on my mind.

Vocalist DeeAnn gives a personal tribute to her children on this album that has her singing of unconditional love. The music itself has a mix of acoustic and synthetic support, with thick pulses on “Blue Skies” and a 1980s percussion support for “Here To Stay” and “Killing Me Softly”. Her earnest voice is heartfelt on a spirited read of Fine and Mellow” and her soul is on her sleeve on a vulnerable “You Are My Sunshine”. Personal portraits.
