Anat Cohen Quartetinho: Bloom

One of the truly freshest voice on the clarinet, Anat Cohen stretches her worldview on this  latest album. In the  past, she has explored Brazilian folk music as well as jazz both modern and traditional. This time around, with her compact team of Vitor Goncalves/p-acc, Tal Mashiach/b-g and James Shipp/vib-mar-perc to mix the bst of both worlds on this 8 song session. Her  John Kirby-ish “The Night Owl” has a rich and jazzy bounce, while there is a folksy bohemia to “Superheroes In The Gig Economy” and “Friends In Every Manner of Conveyance” as Ms. Cohen glides around the accordion and vibes. Hints of Astor Piazzolla come to the surface on the dark “Tango Para Guillermo” and Cohen’s clarinet resonates with lovely slurs on the fun and bluesy read of Thelonious Monk’s “Trinkle, Tinkle”. Tenacious textures and tones.
