Let’s talk about this…
Is there really a lady who can sing the earthy blues better than Susan Tedeschi? Yes, her husband Derek Trucks is versatile on acoustic and electric guitars, and does wonders on the closing duet “Calling Out To You.” He’s great, but like all good husbands in the know, his job is to make his wife look good, and Susan is unbelievable on this mix of tracks. The band, which originally took its lead from the Allmann Brothers, has now a sound and feel of its own, with the horn secion of Kebbi Williams/sax, Maurice Brown/tp and Saunders Sermons/tb as hip and hot as anything this side of Stax Records. She sound rough and ready on “ Made Up Mind,” raucous on “Whiskey Legs” and hauntingly bluesy on “Do I Look Worried.” Wonderful B3 sounds ooze in and out of the spacey “All That I Need” and all throughout, Truck’s voice is grabbing you by the throat while Trucks’ guitar tries this and that to keep the music tasty. They are the band all fans of bluesy rockers aspire to.
