Composer Mark Masters brings together some of LA’s finest in Tim Hagans/tp, Nicole McCabe/as, Jerry Pinter/ts-ss, Dave Woodley/tb, John Dickson/frhn, Jeff Colella/p, Chris COlangelo/b and Kendall Kay/dr for a collection of originals that harken back to Miles’ Birth of the Cool. While some of the pieces such as “Doyle Hud’s Two Step” have a post bop feel, and “Velocity” includes a funky backbeat, there’s no denying that the rich and warm harmonies serve as a salute to the classic 40s-50’s sessions. Hagans’ horn is the perfect tool here, fitting well on the velvety “Pebles” the muted “Deep Pools” and the easy swinger “The Soic” with McCabe’s alto as spicy as Pepper on “Waxing and Waning”. A breeze on PCH.
