Western Jazz Collective: Dark Journey

Subtitled “The Music of Andrew Rathburn”, this album brings together a collection of musical journeys by composer, reed man and band member Andrew Rathbun, played alongside Scott Cowan/tp, Greg Jasperse/voc, Matt Landon/g, Matthew Fries/p, John Hebert/b,  Keith Hall/dr and guest Kevin Jones/perc. The 9 pieces have a wide range of moods, with each song a rich journey in themselves, . Rahbun’s tenor sways with Landon on the deep groove of “Different Directions”, and his Methney-esque “Reading The Exits” has his tenor blend with Landon in majesterial form. Rathubun and Cowan cry out over Hebert’s drive on the intricate “Infinite Being”, and Hall rocks hard over the earthy beat for Rathbun’s soprano sax for “Making No Sense”. Jasperese’s voice is like an extra horn, adding to the palpable harmonies, and standing out on the strong “ Echoes”. A pen and a reed for rich ideas.
