Matt Steckler/Yayoi Ikawa/Lonnie Plaxico/Tony Lewis: Old Friends Beckoned New Sounds Reckoned

The co-op quartet of Matt Steckler/sax-fl, Yayoi Ikawa/p, Lonnie  Plaxico/b and Tony Lewis/dr bring back a soulful postbop feel akin to the glory days of Cannonball Adderley on this hip to be hep release. Steckler’s alto sax has that warm Baptist preacher of a tone, gliding over Lewis Ujawa’s  6/8 gospel groove of “Prince Eleventy” and hitting hard on the pulpit preaching of “Show Some Class”. Lewis simmers under Ikawa’s dark modal colors on “Nunavut” and is romantic on a richly melodic “Here and Now”. Plaxico’s bass gets a chance to shine around Steckler’s soprano sax on a pastoral “I’d Know It If I Heard It” while a dreamy “Forgive” has Steckler floating with his flute. Soulful struts.
