Sam  Phillips: A Boot And A Shoe

Known for her early work with the genre of “Contemporary Christian Music” and then doing some psycho pop work later on, Sam Phillips made a sharp turn on this recently reissued 2004 album. Produced by roots specialist T-Bone Walker, this release had Phillips in a Spartan and rural atmosphere with a couple ringers like drummer Jim Keltner and guitarist Marc Ribot fitting in with Chris Bruce/g, Patrick Warren/key, Mike Elizondo-Dave  Piltch/b and the Section String Quartet. Ms. Phillips cool and bohemian voice works richly in this back porch atmosphere, lilting to “ Drawman”, carrying a lit candle on “How To Quit” and cooing on the understated “Red Silk 5”. The intimate messages fit the music well, making the album almost confessional. Dreaming a little dream.
