Ok, am I the only one who sees the punny reference to tenor sax giant Stan Getz on Jeff Rupert’s latest release. First of all, he’s got a tone and style just like The Mellifluous One. Second, he’s brought Getz alumnus Kenny Barron to play piano here, along with Joe Farnsworth/dr and Peter Washington. The songs themselves, all originals, sound like they were made for Stan the Man, as you’ve got a sensuous blonde and slim “Lana Turner” cooing in your ear, and a suave Latin Lover in “Comanche Crush” with Barron in glorious lyricism. Likewise the lights get dark with Barron to set the stage for the leader’s bel canto “Pharoah’s Daughter” with Farnsworth cymbals caressing a glowing “Like Someone In Love” and his brushes assuaging the title tune. Crooning out a final “Promenade In Blue”, Rupert shows, that, no, it never Getz better than this!
